Traveller Story: Relaxed and carefree in Regional France

John and Valerie Burt travelled on our La Grande France tour in May 2017. John's favourites places on tour were the towns of Sarlat, Couiza and Nimes, plus the visit to the Lascaux Caves. He believes the relaxed 3 night stays with the day trips made the tour most enjoyable.

Your Name:

John Burt

What tour did you travel on?

Le Grande France

When did you travel?

May 2017

Why did you select this particular tour?

It fitted in between touring on our own in the UK and then touring Italy afterwards on our own. We thought we would need a break from planning everything on our own and the tour visited one place on my bucket list (Lascaux Caves). Needless to say, the tour was well run by the tour leader and the places we visited were absolutely amazing.

Who did you travel with?

My wife, Valerie.

What was your favourite place/s on your Albatross tour?

It is hard to pick. All the places we stayed at were great. The day tours from Sarlat were a highlight, as were some of the day tours from Couiza and Nimes. To pick, we would say Sarlat then Couiza, then Nimes.

What was the most amazing thing you saw or did on your Albatross tour?

The barge cruise on the Dordogne, visit to Rocamadour, Carcassonne, the canal boat tour on Canal du Midi at Castelnaudary and various chateaus and walled cities. Plus the visit to Les Baux and the somber reflection at Oradour-sur-Glane were amazing. For us the most amazing things was the barge cruise on the Dordogne and the visit to Les Baux to see the light show in the old quarry.

What was your most memorable moment on tour?

The visit to the Lascaux Caves was the most memorable moment. Looking at the paintings, learning how the original caves are replicated was most interesting.

What was your favourite meal on tour?

All the food experiences were amazing, but we have no particular favourite.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in travelling on this tour?

  • The shops in Rocamadour have the cheapest Opinel knives anywhere on the tour.
  • Take a good travel camera that take photographs in low light (for example the Panasonic TZ110 or Sony DSC-RX100). Many places such as cathedrals, churches, and museums forbid flash, but allow pictures to be taken without flash.

Would you recommend this tour to family and friends? If so, why?

Yes. The three day stays in one place with day trips made the tour most enjoyable. We found the tour not hurried in the mornings, and all inclusive for the tour highlights. You can do the tour and excursions without paying any extra.
