Traveller Story: The Castles of Kings and Hitler's Hideaway

Avril Harvey and her husband travelled on the Black Forest, Bavaria and the Tyrol tour in May 2014. They were left gasping each day at the stunning scenery and the diverse history of the region. Avril loved the great pace and organisation of the tour, as well as the diverse itinerary.

Name:

Avril Harvey

What tour did you travel on?

Black Forest, Bavaria and The Tyrol

When did you travel?

May/June, 2014

Why did you select this particular tour?

Apart from Salzburg we had not been to the places on this tour. We knew the area would be scenically stunning, and we were interested in the history of the area as featured in sites as diverse as Neuschwanstein Castle, Oberammergau and Hitler's Eagle's Nest.

Who did you travel with?

With my husband.

Have you travelled with us previously?

That was our first Albatross tour, I have done another one since then.

What was your favourite place/s on your Albatross tour?

Neuschwanstein Castle was extraordinary, as was the Wieskirche. But, on the whole it was the wonderful scenery which really left us gasping every single day along with the lovely towns and villages we visited.

What was the most amazing thing you saw or did on your Albatross tour?

It is difficult to choose one thing as there were so many things which impressed us on this tour and the variety was terrific - from the Garden Island of Mainau to the Passion Play theatre at Oberammergau, the castles of King Ludwig and the beautiful baroque churches. So much was covered in such a short time yet we never felt harried or rushed.

I guess if I really MUST choose one amazing thing it would have to be King Ludwig's underground theatre and the artificial lake at Linderhof, where he sat in splendid solitude in his royal box to watch operas by Wagner. That was indeed truly amazing.

Tell us about your most memorable moment on tour?

On tour our most memorable moment was getting into Hitler's brass lift at the Eagle's Nest and the feeling of being in touch with History with a capital H. The sense of the past right then was palpable.

What was your favourite meal on tour?

The meal at the oldest restaurant in Salzburg. Not only for the excellent food but for the setting and the ambience and the comfortable feeling that people had been enjoying eating together in this place for hundreds of years.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in travelling on this tour?

Just sit back and enjoy the amazing and varied experiences this tour offers.

Would you recommend this tour to family and friends? If so, why?

I already have because I think they would enjoy it as much as we did. The tour offered a great pace and selection of sightseeing towns. Well organised. Fantastic!
